How to nail your Radio Interview 1 of 2

Updated: Aug 25, 2019

Utilizing traditional media outlets to get the word of your book out can be very effective in building an audience. Doing interviews with radio shows, newspapers, television shows and magazines can be a great way to gain exposure. But, for media interviews to be well-received, you must be fully prepared.

Book Trail connects authors to our partnered media outlets. In making sure both our host and listeners will be satisfied, here are tested ways on how to nail your radio interview.

1. Don’t bark up the wrong tree

Have you experienced sharing your book to people who are not interested with its topic? It’s like sharing Asian cooking recipes to an American football team. Don’t get me wrong, few of them might be remotely interested in cooking but what I mean is the majority of the group, they really don’t want to hear about it. You’re investing to get your book out, to have the airtime and share the spotlight with the radio host. A little research won’t hurt.

You’d know the audience of that radio show by simply checking their website, previous interviews and topics they’ve covered. It also helps if the host can relate to your book’s topic.

2. Prepare for the occasion.

Many radio shows work differently. Some will call you days before the scheduled interview to slightly cover the topic that needs to be discussed. They will usually provide you an idea of what is going to happen and some best practices to sound great during the show. Some will send you guest analysis sheet days before the show. It’s a file which you need to fill out your bio, what’s your book about and sometimes, you can write down topics which you want to discuss during the show.

It’s also better to prepare some notes or even have the book with you during the interview. During the show, you can read few parts of the book if needed. And surely, this will stir the interest of your listeners.

Most importantly, enjoy the show. You need to sound confident and convincing to give good impression to listeners. It mostly happens when you’re enjoying the moment.

Book Trail Agency is partnered with Iheart Radio, NBC and many radio channels globally. We have consultants that are interested to know the message of your book. They will help you tap into suitable radio channels that have potential listeners for your book.
